| Safety Awareness Programme |
To bring awareness among the labourers working in the yard, safety indicated banners and posters are affixed in the plots, with about 26 hoardings erected in the yard. Training is also given to the labours by Training Institute, GMB. Following training has been completed up till now (31/08/2008):
- Basic safety for all - 14693 labours.
- Gas cutter training - 2585 labours
- Asbestos removal training - 442 labours
- Basic Fire fighting - 595 labours
- Basic safety refresh - 83 labours
- Master / Mukadam - 66 labours

| GMB has created infrastructure such as roads, electrification, water supply, bridges, development of plots, building for GMB administrative office, bank, post office, Customs & Excise office, telephone office, factory and labour dept. offices, and training institute etc. |

| Development Plan |
- Labour Housing Complex has been created to provide suitable accommodation with proper infrastructure facilities. GMB has acquired land of about 242813 sq.mtr at two places- at Alang and 51190 sqm, and at Sosiya. GMB has also decided to provide proper infrastructure facilities in the housing complex.

GMB has also initiated work for the housing complex. GMB has appointed an architect for planning of the same. The whole land at Sosiya falls under CRZ limit, while at Alang, part of the land falls under CRZ. Therefore, it has been decided to create housing facilities in the first phase, at the land available out side CRZ and accordingly, planning has been made for accommodating 4464 labours.
- R. C. C. Jetty
To provide berthing facilities to tugs, GMB has planned to create berthing facilities of Sosiya yard. In this connection detailed geo-tech investigation and orientation of jetty are carried out. A proposal of plans and estimate amounting to Rs. 28.82 crores has been submitted to head office. In the proposal, components considered are as under:
Phase - I : RCC Jetty of size 100 x 12 M. Pile approach 100 m length Oil reception facilities Estimated Cost Rs. 14.14 Crore
Phase - II : Extension of jetty 100 mt. Length Breakwater Estimated Cost Rs. 14.67 Crore
- Security Wall
GMB has planned to cover the yard keeping in view the security factor thereby to make it a customs bounded area. The proposal is under consideration.
- Transport Nagar
GMB has proposed to create an integrated facility for all activities that can cater to the multiple needs such as parking, halting, waiting, office space, loading, servicing, communication etc. In this connection, a site suitability study has been carried out by CEPT Engineers and according to their recommendation report, proposal regarding availability of land is being considered.

| Land |
| For carrying out various developmental activities and for providing infrastructure facilities in the yard, GMB has submitted proposals for transferring government land and to acquire private land in the nearby villages. The applications were made at various stages as and when requirement arose. |

Road Infrastructure
The shipbreaking yard has 171 plots that have been developed along the coast in a stretch of about 10 km. All the 171 plots are linked with the four-lane service road. The yard is connected to highways by two separate approach roads. The main approach road to Alang yard is four-lane while the one connecting Sosiya is two-lane.
Plots
At present, total 171 plots exists at ship recycling yard, of which 92 in Alang yard and 79 in Sosiya yard. Of these 10, plots are of 6000 sqm. area are earmarked for breaking VLCCs / ULCCs
Total Ship recycling plot area of Alang and Sosiya is:
Alang: 219617 Sqm.
Sosiya: 169575 Sqm.
Water Supply
GMB has developed water supply scheme on Mahi Pariage pipeline based permanent water supply scheme in the Alang - Sosiya ship recycling yard. Main components of the scheme are as under :
- HGLR of 25 lacs Ltrs. Capacity at Trapaj
- Gravity main pipeline from Trapaj to Alang Sosiya Yard.
- Underground sump of 10 lacs ltrs. Capacity at Alang.
- R.C.C. E.S.R. of 12.50 lacs. Ltrs capacity at Alang
- Under ground sump of 6 lacs ltrs. Capacity at Sosiya.
- R.C.C. E.S.R. of 7.5 lacs ltrs. Capacity at Sosiya. Everyday about 1 MLD water is supplied in the yard by this scheme. Every plot gets about 5000 ltrs. Water is available every day. Total 21 stand posts are created throughout the yard, which supplies water to the labours & workers working in the yard.
Fire Fighting
Fire fighting arrangement in the yard is being looked after by GMB. The fire fighting force headed by fire officer is equipped with the following equipments:

- Portable water pump - 06 Nos.

- Ambulance van - 01 No.
- One bore with electric submersible pump of 900 Lit. per minute and diesel pump.

Land fill site for Disposal of Solid waste:
For the proper disposal for toxic and non-toxic materials generated from the breaking of the ships, a land fill site has been developed in 7 hectares of land the following facilities has been developed in first phase
- Asbestos and Glasswool fill - 110 m X 85 m
- Municipal waste Land fill - 60 m X 50 m
- Industrial solidwaste & chemical land fill- 60 m X 50 m
- Administrative building, internal roads, equipment center, and compound wall.

Electrification
The yard has adequate facilities for power with Gujarat Electricity Board (GEB) providing industrial feeder lines. GMB has illuminated the yard by HPSV street lights and high-mast light towers. Two underground tanks, each of 3-lakh litres capacity are available. There is also a tube-well to draw saline water for fire-fighting purposes. |
