Salt Jetty
Construction of jetty and allied infrastructure for salt export near Bagasara, Rajkot
Project: Construction of jetty and allied infrastructure for salt export near Bagasara, Rajkot
India is the third largest producer of salt in the world and Gujarat with its coastline of 1600 km dominates the salt production sector in India. Gujarat state single-handedly produces 11.5 million metric tons of salt, which is about 70% of the country’s annual production of 16 million metric tons (year 2006).
Maliya Taluka is situated at the north frontier of Rajkot district. Presently it produces salt of about 10 lac MT per annum. The major areas which produce salt are: Lavanpur, Versa Medi, Vavania, Bagasara, Jajasar, Haripar and Hanjiasar. Approximately 40000 acres of land has been allotted for the production of salt.
These regions have ample export potential. Taking into consideration the transportation cost for the low value commodity an export facility within 30 – 40 km is ideal. Mailya zone has potential to export about 1.5 million MT per annum. The nearest highway to Maliya Region is National Highway 8A, which is about 35 km. The major hurdles for developing the location as salt hub for export is lack of proper road infrastructure and dedicated port facilities.
The Government of Gujarat intends to strengthen its infrastructure by establishing a dedicated port infrastructure in the Malia region for export of salt.
The anticipated salt exports from the proposed jetty in Maliya region are:
- First 5 years 1.50 million MT per annum
- Next 5 years 1.75 million MT per annum
- Thereafter 2.0 million MT per annum
The development of jetty and allied infrastructure facilities at Bagasara will avail the benefits like:
- Increase in salt production
- Opening new avenues for export
- Opportunities of employment
- Socio - economical growth in the region
- Reduction in transportation cost of salt
- Revenue earnings through Lease, Cess and foreign exchange
- Overall growth of the region
The estimated cost of whole project with land cost is INR 80.20 Cr.
