During the financial year 2001-2002, GMB has handled a record
cargo of 82.54 million tones, registering an impressive growth
of about 13 per cent over the previous year. It is pertinent to
note that in preceding two consecutive years, the total tonnage
handled by GMB represented the highest traffic even when
compared to all the Major ports of India.
Against the operating income of Rs. 162.39 crore in the FY
2000-01, the board has earned an operating income of Rs. 176.22
crore in the last FY, thus registering a growth of 8.5% over the
preceding year. The operating expenditure of the board has
reduced to 73.61 crore from Rs. 84.03 crore in the FY 2000-01,
which indicates the reduction by more than 14% over the
preceding year. Thus, GMB has earned more than Rs.100 crore of
operating profit in the last FY. (# The figures for the
2001-2002 are to be treated as provisional figures)
The development of state-of-the-art Chemical Port Terminal by
GCPTCL with world-class infrastructure near Dahej signifies the
landmark achievement for the state. In the last FY, the terminal
handled a total of 7.60 lakh tonnes of cargo which includes vast
range of complex chemicals like Styrene Monomer, Butadiene,
Cyclo Hexene, EDC, etc.
The dedicated efforts to prevent accidents in Alang Ship
recycling yard have brought encouraging results as the number of
accidents per lakh LDT (light displacement tonnage) at Alang in
2001-02 has reduced to 0.78 from 2.18 in 1999-2000. The number
of death per lakh LDT over the same period has reduced from 1.12
to 0.44.
In pursuance with the second phase of the safety awareness
drive, GMB had organized “Alang Suraksha Mahotasv”, a seven day
long information-cum entertainment event at Alang (4th to 10th
April 2002), which witnessed an unprecedented attendance of
thousands of workers every day. This was a unique communication
exercise by itself as it dispensed the conventional style of
pedagogic communication and strived to create awareness by
spreading information through entertainment.
Sensing the future competitive scenario, and in order to gear up
to the future challenges, GMB had hired KPMG, one of the leading
international consulting firms, to rationalize the schedule of
port charges. The project encompassed extensive discussions with
the port users & corporate entities, detailed survey to assess
the level of the port infrastructure, etc. The project has been
successfully concluded and would be submitted to the state
government for approval in a short time.
GMB has hired Deloitte Haskins & Sells, an internationally
renowned consulting firm to address the issue of organizational
restructuring with an objective to bring in enhanced efficiency
and competitiveness in the organizational functions. The Dutch
consultants from PODEG (Port Development of Gujarat) are
actively participating in this project.
GMB is actively pursuing the plan to form an independent
regulating body for the state port sector, Gujarat Maritime
Authority (GMA) in close collaboration with the Dutch experts
from PODEG.
Gujarat Maritime Board is conducting a major exercise to
introduce contemporary double-entry accounting system. This
project reflects the paradigm shift in the outlook of GMB as the
changed accounting system will enable to evolve an accurate
picture of business operations and performance of the
organization.
In line with sound corporate governance policies pursued by GMB,
three independent accountants have successfully conducted the
concurrent audit during the last FY. It is envisaged that such a
practice will serve as an effective control and monitoring
mechanism over the business operations of the board.
In collaboration with Department of Lighthouses & Lightships and
Kandla Port Trust, GMB is planning to set up a state-of-the-art
Vehicle Traffic Service (VTS) in Gulf of Kachchh at the total
estimated cost of Rs. 165 crores. GMB has also planned to
introduce Vessel Traffic Management System (VTMS) in
Hazira-Magdalla channel to ensure navigational safety of the
vessals.
GMB is planning to set up a Retirement Benefit Trust, which will
ensure post-retirement social security for employees of the
Board.
GMB has introduced Alang Information System (AIS) with an
objective to facilitate faster exchange of information between
Alang office and the head office at Gandhinagar. This system is
aimed at strengthening the quality and timeliness aspects in
decision-making process.

Gujarat Maritime
Board has achieved record cargo handling rate at OKHA Port.
A 14,575 MT of bauxite was loaded
on ship M V JAGRANI in 20 hrs at Okha port on 14-07-2002. The
stevedoring agent marine Bulk Cargo movers berthed the ship on
14-07-2002 at OKHA Port. this is attributed to excellent
teamwork as exhibited by stevedore agent and port management.
A historic agreement was signed
between M/s CAIRN Energy India Pty. Limited (CEIL) and Gujarat
Maritime Board (GMB) for Right of Use (RoU) to lay down a gas
pipeline within the port limits of Magdalla off Suvali village
in Surat district for the purpose of transporting gas from their
Lakshmi gas field to consumers in the state of Gujarat.

It is to announce
that the port sector has succeed to attract a total investment
of Rs. 15,585 crores and total 35 Memorandum of
Understandings (MOU) have been signed during the Global
Investors’ Summit Vibrant Gujarat 2005. All these projects
comprise of all types of port projects such as development of
new Greenfield ports, expansion of already developed Greenfield
ports, construction of new terminals in existing minor ports,
ship yard facilities, expansion of captive jetty project,
Hazardous waste disposal facilities, new port facilities in
existing ports, improvement of repairing facilities and dry
docks, enhancing cargo handling through mechanized handling
system, strengthening of existing jetty structures, Cruise
training ship, Oil reception facilities etc.
The prominent National/International companies like Shell group,
Hutchison, Adani group, Essar group, Petronet LNG Ltd., Welspun
group, Sanghi Industries and others have shown interest for
investment in the above projects.

A team of 5 senior
journalists from New Delhi visited Dahej port on 18th September,
2004. At the outset, VC & CEO briefed them about the activities
of GMB and contributions made the GMB in the port sector. This
was followed by a presentation on Dahej Port highlighting the
progress made by GMB in captive jetty projects. The Journalists
also visited the LNG Terminal of Petronet LNG Limited during the
visit.

feather studded in the crown of GMB that our Navlakhi Port
recorded new milestone by unloading 22134 MT Coal Cargo during
24 Hrs. on 31st July 2004.
