Main Criteria:
Pipavav is a Free Weather direct
berthing facilities. It is situated in the east coast of Saurashtra
on the western coast of India
Current port capacity:
2.5 mln tonnes;
Trade estimate 2010:
2.5 mln tonnes;
Facilities:
The GPPL salt pier – length 725m with 14m draft –
has a throughput capacity of 14 mln tonnes. The L&T clinker pier – length 340m –
has an annual capacity of 3 mln tonnes. Current ship-size restriction stands at
30.000 DWT; LPG jetty has been constructed and is operational.
Planned Activities:

The Port of Singapore Authority (PSA) intends to Operate a transhipment
container terminal in Pipavav;

In addition there are plans for an chemical industrial park
and for a RoRo service between Pipavav and Dahej;

Plans for dedicated ship scrapping facility for oil tankers;
Industries:
An industrial centre is being developed. In addition
a local power station (2000 MW) in under construction – to be commissioned in
2005. Input will consist of 2.5 mln tonnes of LNG and 2.8 mln tonnes of imported
coal. Hindustan Petroleum imports LPG;
Infrastructure:
There is a narrow gauge railway and an adequate
road, which are both being up-graded. Upgrading of the connection between Pipavav–
Mahuva is in the proposal stage, while the narrow gauge rail between
Pipavav – Rajula (22 km) and further to Dhola and Surendranagar, is
broadened.
