Main Criteria:
Not yet operational. The port is (see also Magdalla) nominated as a ‘green field’ site to be developed
through private sector participation.
Location:
120 miles North of Mumbai and therefore intended to compete
with -, respectively ‘assist in relieving congestion’ in Mumbai
for cargoes transported between Mumbai and New Delhi.
Cargoes planned:
LNG (Shell), LPG, oil products,
petrochemicals, cement/clinker, iron ore, fertilisers, general
cargoes. Furthermore, gas from the offshore oilfields NW of Mumbai
is to be landed here.
Industries/facilities:
Most of the
industries/facilities indicated under Magdalla are actually situated
in Hazira (Larsen and Toubro, KRIBHCO, the petrochemical complex of
Reliance and Essar Steel). The Hazira industrial area is expected to
become one of the largest in India;Furthermore several power projects are developed or
under consideration, including 2 - 160 and 180 MW power plants –
input LNG. One of these plants (160 MW) is under construction.
Facilities planned:
New facilities intended for
the industries of Magdalla (see) include the construction of a
180-meter jetty (with berthing facilities in 15 m of water depth)
and a back-up area. Also GMB plans the construction of terminal
facilities for cargo handling and for a RoRo service; There are also possibilities that the power stations
from the Gujarat Electricity Board at Ukai and Wanakbari will be
serviced with coal through Hazira/Magdalla. Until now these plants
use domestic coal.
Infrastructure:
Road/rail connections available, but in need
of upgrading. The rail connection has to be extended into the port, the road upgrading to four lanes toll road
between Hazira and Icchapore has been completed, while a four lane road connection of the Magdalla – Palsana
road (26km) is under proposal.
