Mr. I.P. Gautam began his career with the Indian Revenue Service as an Assistant Commissioner with the Income Tax department and went on to join the prestigious Indian Administrative Service in 1986.


Mr. I. P. Gautam, IAS is currently the Principal Secretary, Urban Development Department and is holding the additional charge of Ports & Transport Department, Government of Gujarat. His association with Gujarat Maritime Board is not new. In fact, this is his second stint with the Ports & Transport Department. He is best remembered as the Municipal Commissioner of Ahmedabad for successfully implementing and monitoring the popular Bus Rapid Transport System (BRTS) project, which is the first and the only one of its kind in India and has received national and international recognition. BRTS – Ahmedabad project, has received awards from many national and international organizations of which one prestigious award is from the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India. This project, which is the dream project of the Hon’ble Chief Minister, Gujarat has put Ahmedabad on the international map and the entire credit for effectively implementing it goes to Mr. Gautam. Development of Sabarmati Riverfront is also one of his many achievements as the Municipal Commissioner, Ahmedabad.


During the span of his career, he has implemented major infrastructure projects and has held coveted positions like the Secretary to Hon’ble Chief Minister, Secretary – Energy & Petrochemical Department, Managing Director – Gujarat Power Corporation Ltd, Director (Finance) - Sardar Sarovar Narmada Project, Managing Director – Gujarat Industrial Investment Corporation, Municipal Commissioner - Rajkot etc just to name a few. His major contributions have been both in terms of improving regulatory mechanisms, delivery services as well as managing growth related investments for the State.
