GMB had organized a
seven day long celebration “Alang Suraksha Mahotsav” at Alang from
4th April 2002 to 10th April 2002. The Mahotsav witnessed the
unprecedented attendance of thousands of workers throughout the week
and proved the efficacy of the concept. This was a unique
communication exercise by itself as it dispensed the conventional
style of pedagogic communication and strived to create awareness by
spreading information through entertainment.
The primary objective
of this celebration was to educate the workers at Alang on safety
measures by highlighting the unpleasant consequences of unsafe
working methods and pleasant consequences of safe working methods.
The celebration was marked with variety of entertaining performances
by cultural troupes from Gujarat, Orissa, Uttar Pradesh, etc and
sports competition among the worker community. The cultural
performances were conceived as important media for safety awareness
as the element of entertainment within were interspersed with
important safety messages for the workers. As a special attraction
for the event, two hi-tech interactive robotic devices, human Robot
and hydraulic crane were prepared to generate excitement among the
workers and communicate the safety messages. The interactive format
for the event also included the safety quiz for the workers, wherein
the winners were offered surprise prizes. On the concluding day of
the event, the safety pledge ceremony was held in which thousands of
the workers participated with full enthusiasm.
GMB intends to launch
such innovative safety awareness drives from time to time so that
the workers and ship-recycling community at large gains valuable
insights into safety procedures and develop heightened concern for
safe ship breaking practices.
